TORAH'S MESSAGE  -  by Rabbi Rami Pavolotzky

Regarding the lighting of Hanukkah candles, there’s a famous question:  the bottle of oil the makkabim found in Jerusalem’s Temple should have burnt for only one day.   Nevertheless it lasted for eight days, and because of that miracle we light the candles during eight days.  However, given that for one day the fire blazed naturally, we deduce that the miracle endured  for seven days.   The question is:  Shouldn’t we light the candles for only seven days, which is the time the miracle lasted?

A wise answer to this question is that nature is in somehow miraculous:  each day should be lived as a miracle.  What seems to be “normal” is really a wonderful gift received daily.

May G-d grant us in this time of Hanukkah, that every time we see a fire blazing we may see in it the miracle of life.

            Shabbat Shalom
